This time of year brings some of my favourite things: Scarves, boots, snow, holiday time with the family… but with that also comes dry skin, chapped lips, and the dreaded staticky hair. Don’t you hate it when you take that scarf and toque off and up goes your hair? Making it look like you had just rubbed a balloon on top of your head, just like when you were a child. The good news is there are things you can do to help:
1) Make sure you are using a moisture rich shampoo & conditioner
Using moisture rich shampoo and conditioner keeps the scalp hydrated and allows the hair shaft to be nourished as well. Our go to is Davines’ Naturaltech Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner for dry brittle hair. The Nourishing family is rich in antioxidants which fight free radicals (which are toxic byproducts of oxygen metabolism that can cause significant damage to living cells and tissues).
2) Shampoo less often.
Every time we shampoo our hair, we are stripping the natural oils from our scalp that are needed for our hair. If you usually wash your hair daily, try skipping a day or two in between.
3) Keep a leave in treatment in your purse during the cold seasons
The dry cold, along with cold weather clothing (scarves, toques and sweaters) can wreck your perfectly styled locks that you began the day with. Keeping a hair oil (I love Hairdressers Invisible Oil, by Bumble & Bumble) or a leave in conditioner at your disposal is a great way to stop static in its tracks. By applying a drop of oil or leave in conditioner to your hair you are then breaking the electric charge that causes the static in the first place. (For a great leave in conditioner, try Bumble & Bumble Save the Day.)
4) Use a Thermal Protector before blow drying or heat styling
Any sort of heat styling can rob your hair of moisture. Make sure to use a true heat protector that protects up to 450 degrees. Spraying on a thermal protector before using any heat tools can not only protect but lock in shine to your hair shaft, as a result of maintaining the hairs moisture. (All of the Glow Family by Bumble & Bumble and Davines Melu Shield have 450 degree heat protection.)
5) Use boar bristle brushes and wooden combs
Plastic combs and brushes can increase static. Using a boar bristle brush or wooden combs can prevent damage and breakage as well as avoiding static. They help to distribute the natural oils down the hair shaft that in itself prevents static. Investing in good combs and brushes are well worth it!
Time to buckle down and get ready for the cold weather, as it is here to stay… At least for another 3 months anyways. Happy Hair Days to you all!
